REMEMBERING AND RETURNING
An ancient Indian system for healing, Ayurveda translates as the science or knowledge of life. In essence, it is the art of living in harmony with the laws of nature. Mullein & Sparrow founder Anit Hora was born in India where Ayurveda was such an integrated part of life, she didn't even notice it. When her parents moved her to New York City, they brought their ways with them. They would make strange concoctions whenever she would get sick and would constantly remind her what foods she should avoid. Anit happily ignored them as children do.
As she got a bit older and started caring about being pretty, her mom would sit her down and lovingly massage herb infused oils into her head while explaining beauty to her form an Ayurveda perspective. Anit was day-dreaming about music concerts and boys, as teenagers do. Then Anit graduated college. She got her first apartment in Brooklyn and a job in fashion design. She worked hard. Life felt like life had finally begun. Then she had an existential crisis, as young adults do.
So in search of meaning, truth, purpose, and understanding, she traveled. She met with people from all over the world. She saw their ways and often thought of her parents. She practiced yoga and thought of her roots. She studied herbal medicine and thought of her own heritage in natural medicine. Finally the dots connected and she opened her eyes to herself. Like many before her, Anit had to go far away before she was able to recognize what was with her all along. She remembered her traditions and finally returned home to them.
REVERENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY
Ayurveda is an art of living that encompasses all aspects of being; body, mind and spirit. It is based on the premise that man is a creation of cosmic consciousness and what is present in the larger cosmos is also present in man. And as man is a microcosm of the greater universe, the five elements of Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth also exist within each individual. A unique combination of these elements is what comprises the three doshas of Kapha, Pitta and Vata. All three doshas exist simultaneously in everyone but one is usually primary and the proportions vary from person to person.
The main emphasis of Ayurvedic living is on finding balance in all aspects of life through an ideology of self-care. It isn't exclusively about Sanskrit terms or exotic ingredients but also about the beauty which arises through balanced living and simple acts of revert self-care. It is approaching your daily health and beauty routines as opportunities to care for the sacred manifestation of life's energy. When you accept the responsibility of self-care you honor yourself in a way that enhances vitality, grace, and luminosity.
