Day 6...Meet Madeline
Posted on December 19 2016
This year, Mullein & Sparrow is celebrating our own version of the '12 Days' by adopting a cutie-pie from the Farm Sanctuary
each day as a way to give back this season. For Day 6, meet Madeline, the only turkey we'd want to spend Thanksgiving with!
Madeline was there to greet Southern California staff members when they arrived for work one morning in the fall of 2015. Though she had been left at the shelter anonymously, her origin was no mystery: her shorn beak told us that she had come from a factory farm. Like so many others we’ve welcomed, Madeline had suffered “debeaking,” a procedure in which the sensitive, nerve-filled tip of the beak is amputated with a hot blade or infrared method that kills the tissue of the upper beak tip. Common among industrial turkey producers, who raise turkeys by the thousands in intensely crowded warehouses, this mutilation is intended to discourage fighting among the stressed and frustrated birds. Madeline is now forever safe from such cruelty and free to be her true self: a sweetheart who adores sitting in your lap and soaking up the love.
Interested in adopting your own? You could earn a $20 gift card to Mullein & Sparrow for doing so. Find out how here.
