Day 4...Meet Mother
Posted on December 21 2016
This year, Mullein & Sparrow is celebrating our own version of the '12 Days' by adopting a cutie-pie from the Farm Sanctuary
each day as a way to give back this season. For Day 4, meet Mother, the New York Goose.
When some good Samaritans found Mother, she was lying on the side of the road and had clearly been hit by a car. The rescuers brought her to Cornell University Hospital for Animals, which then reached out to Farm Sanctuary. Once Mother had been given a clean bill of health, they welcomed her to their New York Shelter. This sweet, shy bird had probably been dumped by caregivers who no longer wanted her. Like rabbits and ducks, geese are commonly purchased as babies by people who are unprepared to care for them as adults. Many later “release” these animals into the wild, figuring mistakenly that they can fend for themselves. Every year Farm Sanctuary receives numerous calls about domestic ducks and geese abandoned on ponds, where they are ill-equipped to survive. A white Embden goose, Mother would have been particularly vulnerable to predators. Ironically, her run-in with the car probably saved her life because it brought her to Farm Sanctuary. There at the shelter, Mother can graze and swim as she pleases, free from the threats of predators and starvation that no domestic animal should ever face.
