Day 2...Meet Merryweather
Posted on December 23 2016
This year, Mullein & Sparrow is celebrating our own version of the '12 Days' by adopting a cutie-pie from the Farm Sanctuary
each day as a way to give back this season. For Day 2, meet Merryweather, the Northern California hen.
Merryweather and her friends began life in an industrial hatchery, as millions of other chicks do every year. With the backyard chicken trend in full swing, business is booming for these operations, which are essentially factory farms for chicks. The newborn birds face callous treatment and injury as they are conveyed through these hatcheries like mass-produced goods. Male chicks, for whom there is little demand, are killed by the millions, by such brutal methods as being ground up alive. Their sisters, at just one day old, are shipped through the mail in cardboard boxes, enduring a journey of up to 72 hours that is harrowing and sometimes fatal. Once they’ve reached their destinations, these young chickens are still at risk of inadequate care from purchasers unprepared for their particular needs. Thankfully, Merryweather and her friends found their way to sanctuary instead. At the Northern California Shelter, these happy birds will be forever safe from harm.
