So . . . Your Oily Skin is Actually Just Dehydrated

It’s hot out there, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to let up anytime soon. While it is important to remain hydrated for your internal health, your skin requires the same TLC. Depleting your skin of essential hydration during warmer, humid months may seem like a good move, but it’s actually counterproductive. Dehydrated skin = more oil production, leading to imbalances and greasy skin. Mix that with the summer heat and sweat and you get just the right environment for upset skin and clogged pores.

In a time where glowing skin is highly coveted, where do we draw the line between plain oily and beautifully dewy?
..
Glowy skin does not look slick and greasy like excess oil does on the skin. Rather, when skin is hydrated and nourished, it exudes a very fresh and healthy appearance. The key to achieving this special glow is to tend to your skins unique needs.

Double Cleansing Shouldn't Mean Double Drying
The Korean Beauty inspired ritual of double cleansing has transformed my skin and is now a staple in my everyday skincare routine. It is the most effective way of giving your skin the deep clean it needs. Makeup removal shouldn't be a tedious process. Oil cleansers will gently and powerfully melt away makeup and dissolve other excess oils in your skin. When wiped away, your skin looks visibly clean and glowy. The remaining oil residue on your skin is the perfect buffer between your cleanser and your skin, allowing your cleanser to remove any remaining impurities, makeup, and pollutants without stripping your skin. Your skin won’t feel tight or look dehydrated, rather, it will look incredibly supple and balanced. This iconic duo ensures that your skin gets the deep clean it needs without stripping it of its essential moisture. The result is clear pores, balanced skin, and a lit-from-within glow that naturally radiates from healthy skin.

Get Your Mask On
I find myself masking way more in the summer because it helps to clarify my skin and control unwanted congestion. Feeling slick and sticky is almost unavoidable on those unbearably humid days, especially if you have oily skin. In preparation, masking is an excellent way of cooling and soothing your skin, as well as controlling oil production. I use this Clay Mask every other day. It sounds excessive, but consistency is key when it comes to masks. Clay is gentle enough that my skin doesn’t feel tight or dry after. Rather, it feels much more clean and fresh. It makes the perfect base for applying the rest of my skincare routine. And on days where I really feel like pampering myself and its too hot to leave the apartment anyway, I apply the mask to my scalp and roots as well. The clay is cooling for my scalp and exfoliates as well as removes residual oils without stripping the delicate skin of my scalp. Try it- you'll be surprised how good it feels!

Mist, Mist, Mist
Misting can be added into your routine in two ways. The first is as a medium for flawless serum application. Lightly mist your skin after cleansing, leaving your skin dampened. Follow by massaging serum onto your damp skin. If you're applying your serum and/or moisturizer on a dry face- STOP and mist immediately. Why? The reasons are two-fold. The first is that most people aren't aware that they over-moisturize, which can be part of why your skin is even oilier in the summer. Applying your moisturizer on a damp, freshly misted face, allows you to gage how much you actually need, and trust us, its far less than you think! Secondly, a damp face allows for smooth application and prevents unnecessary tugging of the skin, which can lead to premature lines, wrinkles and decreased elasticity over time. Ideally, you should be able to pat in your serum/moisturizer, versus rubbing it all over your face, pulling and tugging your skin in every direction you can think of. In skincare, the more gentle you are, the better in the long run and misting helps with this as well as helps you use the correct amount of product for your skin.
..
Mists are also great to keep on hand to refresh through the day, which can feel like a God send in the middle of a hot, summer day. A finishing mist will give your skin just the right amount of hydration for a fresh, glowy look. Grab your mist and take it on-the-go with you for an afternoon skin pick-me-up.

So while it might seem counterintuitive to worry about keeping your skin hydrated in the summer heat, properly hydrated skin all year long is the key to stay glowing!
