Is J-Beauty the next big thing?

The response we received after our K-beauty blog was like no other, and because of it, we are completely hooked on the double cleansing method. But you may have also heard J-beauty, or Japanese beauty, buzzing around the beauty community recently. Although to us it may look like a trend, J-beauty is actually a deeply rooted, traditional take on skincare and beauty. While we in the western world emphasize reversing any damage to the skin, J-beauty takes preventative action. In Japan, the focus in more on inevitable changes in the skin throughout a lifetime rather than relying on a fast, magical cure for skin ailments. Unlike lengthy K-beauty routines or more aggressive American routines, J-beauty takes a more simple, gentle route to skincare. Although our Ayurvedic approach to beauty can learn a few things from J-beauty, we can also relate on many levels too.

Ayurveda, also known as the science of life, is one of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, granting it serious credibility in the ever growing health and wellness realm. And much like J-beauty, it relies on the refined tradition and wisdom of the past for a holistic approach to health and beauty. With a focus on clean ingredients derived from plants and herbs, Ayurveda gives us the tools and wisdom we need to deliver efficient, quality ingredients to our body’s largest organ: our skin.

I decided to test out J-beauty techniques and routines in my own Ayurvedic way. Besides achieving ultra glowing and hydrated skin, I learned that every day feels like a spa day in the J-beauty way.

Deep Cleansing:
Deep cleansing doesn’t have to mean aggressive cleansing or harsh ingredients. J-beauty emphasizes deeply cleansing the skin to provide a clean, balanced base to apply the remainder of your skincare products. For this step, one cleanser will do the trick. Bathing Rituals:
I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t jump for joy when I found out that J-beauty routines emphasized bathing rituals. Give me any excuse that I need to take more baths and I am all over it. Upon my research, I found a striking similarity in the way Japanese view bathing rituals and the way we here at Mullein & Sparrow view them. They are a time to revive, renew, relax, and cleanse the mind, body, and soul. Aside from the physical aspect of cleansing the body, baths are viewed as somewhat of a meditative practice.

A bath is a chance for you to wash away any worries or thoughts after a long day. It provides a clean slate for your night time routine, aids in sleep, and allows you to wake up in the morning feeling fresh and revived. I love to use Pink Himalayan Bath Salts not only for their deep, sensual scent, but for the deeply healing properties of the salt itself. Face Masks:
It appears that we are all on the same page about masking-- we are obsessed. J-beauty masks with products that offer deep hydration and penetration. For this, I of course used our tried and true Clay Mask, which is extremely soothing on the skin. It penetrates deeply to cleanse the skin of any excess dirt or sebum, but is gentle enough not to strip the skin of essential moisture.

Hydration:
Oh how we love our hydrating oils and serums! There is no better feeling than perfectly smooth, soft, and supple skin, and the most efficient way of attaining such is of course by keeping it hydrated. I chose to apply our Rose & Frankincense facial serum nightly because of its ultra hydrating properties (thank you, rose oil!). This serum supports the skin’s natural moisture retention, nourishes the skin, and promotes suppleness and elasticity. It’s easy to glow from within when you’re skin is ultra hydrated and luxurious.
