Whether you’ve decided to ditch weird chemicals, become an environmentally conscious consumer, make the switch to cruelty-free products, or you’re simply starting from the ground up-- building a skincare routine fit for your unique skin can be tough. It’s a slow but sure process, but once you find your holy-grail product lineup, it’s well worth the wait!
As I began phasing out my extensive skincare routine for all-natural products, I noticed that I had to use less and less products to achieve the results I wanted. Even on my acne-prone skin, I no longer needed to use harsh acne treatments. You don’t need a million different products and a dermatologist on speed dial, but you do need products that will nourish your skin with care and love!
Keep it simple and gentle
The skin on your face is very delicate, and must be treated as such. This means no picking at those pesky pimples! If you find yourself getting a break-out, work preventatively to fight it before it has the chance to surface. When I spot a pimple, I treat it by using a clay mask
. It works to refine pores, whisk away dead skin cells, and draw out impurities. Pimples really don’t stand a chance against this all-natural power treatment.
Being gentle also includes lightly massaging your cleanser or your moisturizer in. There is no need to aggressively tug and pull at the skin. Let the product do the work for you.
Know your skin type
Your skin type is the foundation to developing a well-rounded routine. Knowing your skin type = knowing exactly how to target specific skin concerns. Your skin type can vary depending on the season, and it can also change as you get older. Knowing its patterns is key to keeping up with its demands.
Cleanse, Exfoliate, + Always remove your makeup before bed
Hey, we all have those late nights where we don’t think we can bare to stand in front of the mirror for 10 minutes to take care of our skin-- I’ve been there! But don’t be surprised when your complexion rebels. Now this step may seem a little intimidating, but it really only takes two products! I love to use cleansing oil
to remove my makeup--plus this product works even if you don’t wear makeup. It draws out impurities, pollutants, excess oil and dirt to promote a clear, healthy complexion. Once my makeup is removed, I cleanse/exfoliate my skin with brightening cleansing powder
. If you can’t tell, I really can’t get enough of this combination--my skin is so smooth after using this duo. Plus, the brightening cleansing powder
is versatile enough to be used as an everyday cleanser or an exfoliator, depending on how much water you add to it.
Add a serum
Once you know your skin type, its relatively easy to know which serum will be a good fit for you. Think of a serum as a treatment for your skin-- rather than a moisturizer, a serum
will penetrate deep into the skin to target specific concerns. We are a big advocate for oil serums because plant-based oils provide a ton of essential fatty acids and nutrients for our skin to drink up.
My favorite summertime serum is the Rosemary and Clary Sage Serum
. It doesn’t clog my pores, and it sinks into the skin beautifully to leave my face looking radiant from within. It’s also naturally oil-controlling, which is perfect for my skin in this summertime heat and humidity.
