Beauty in a Heat Wave: All Natural Primer

If you’re not affected by the sudden heat wave that has left us New Yorkers melting, consider yourself lucky. As I stand on the hot, crowded subway platform with beads of sweat slowly dripping down my face, and taking with it my freshly applied makeup, all I can think about it how much I’d like to wipe it all off and go bare faced.
..
Summer is the time to do just that-- dial back on our makeup because it ends up melting off anyway. But I’ll be one to admit, it isn’t so easy to just stop wearing makeup. So, I have a few tricks that I use for a “no-makeup makeup look” to keep things light and summer-proof while maintaining a flawless complexion.
..
First things first, cleanse! Our exfoliating cleansing powder is perfect, as it exfoliates away dead skin cells to reveal a clean, smooth base-- essential for optimal absorption of your skincare!
..
But here’s the real highlight of my no makeup makeup routine...pure squalane oil! I like to refer to squalane oil as the new coconut oil. It’s the new cure-all oil for any skin type, and the best part is, its non-comedogenic, fast-absorbing, and acts as a superb multi-use product!
..
What is Squalane?
Our skin naturally produces squalene, which helps protect our skin’s lipid barrier from environmental stressors. Our skin drinks up squalane oil because it’s actually a saturated byproduct of squalene, meaning its very close in chemistry to the naturally-occurring squalene in your skin. It is vegan, derived from olives, and works to improve elasticity, fight bacteria and free radicals and provides essential hydration to the skin.

To Prime:
Although my skin is far from perfect, with some lingering acne scars and texture scattered throughout my cheeks, I love to embrace these small “imperfections” by allowing them to peak through to make my skin look like, well...skin! So I start by patting 2-3 drops of 100% pure squalane oil all over my skin. Unlike other oils, squalane won’t make your makeup slip-and-slide. While I let this soak into my skin for a minute or so, I’ll do my eyebrows or my mascara. Then I apply either concealer or foundation to my skin and it applies seamlessly over my skin. My makeup just melts into my hydrated and supple skin, and stays all day. If I want an extra dewy effect, I’ll simply add some extra squalane oil over my cheekbones for an all-natural “I just got done at the gym” glow.
..
To Apply Makeup:
Squalane oil is the perfect mixing-medium for your face products. Alternatively to using squalane oil as a primer, you can actually mix your foundation or concealer with some oil and apply with your fingers or a brush. This provides just the right amount of coverage without being too heavy.
..
Blush is a must for me because it gives me a beautiful flush of sun-kissed color. To make it look more natural and dewy, I swirl a bit of product onto my finger, add a bit of squalane oil to create a cream and pat it onto the apples of my cheeks. This works really well with highlighters too! It gives you a very glossy glow. Hello, glowing goddess! Combining your skincare with your makeup is truly a win-win, nourishing your skin while creating a glowing, natural complexion.
